JGD Songs & Beats songwriting workshsp supplies guitars, Cajons and brings digital recording equipment for each session to the facility for the participants to play, practice and record on. During the workshop participants practice and learn guitar, cajon, lyric writing, beat making and production and digital recording techniques, to create original musical compositions. Each group collaborates and writes original songs about their life and experiences during the semester, coached by the teaching artists. At the end of the semester, all participants will perform the original songs for family and friends during the commencement ceremony.
The act of making music together with others and collaborating to create original songs gives participants a proven means of non-confrontational, non-violent expression and self-esteem building. This process also helps to reduce tensions by giving the participants agency, time and space for creativity. Skills learned are how to focus on a task, to start and complete a project, to process challenging emotions creatively, and to work with others collaboratively; all required skills that will benefit the participants in school and / or the work force. Workshops culminate in ceremonies where participants are awarded certificates of completion, accompanied by participant performances of original songs created during workshops. Students will receive digital copies of their original recordings and are offered the opportunity to continue working with us through our C.A.P.O(Community Arts Programming and Outreach) program where they will receive further mentoring in the studio with JGD producers and engineers.
